Part 1 of our Client Fitting Diaries series
Sarah walked into our studio last week for what would become her third fitting with us. But this wasn’t always her story.
Twenty Years of Compromise
For over two decades, Sarah has lived with total hair loss. Like many women in her situation, she started with NHS wigs, the practical, accessible option that the healthcare system provides. And for a while, they worked.
But there was always something missing.
“I couldn’t lift the sides up,” Sarah told me during her fitting, demonstrating how her previous high street wigs sat firmly in place. “If I tucked my hair behind my ear at work, it looked… wrong. Fake. So I just stopped doing it.”
It’s a small detail that most people wouldn’t think twice about. But when you’re wearing a wig every single day, these small limitations add up. They become reminders. They change how you move through the world.
The Lace Front Revelation
Sarah first came to us in July 2024, hesitant but hopeful. She’d heard about our lace front wigs, how they offered more flexibility than traditional NHS wigs or high street alternatives but wasn’t sure if they’d really make a difference.
The transformation wasn’t just about appearance.
“I could actually lift the sides,” she said, still sounding slightly amazed months later. “At work, when I’m concentrating, I naturally tuck my hair behind my ear. I haven’t been able to do that in twenty years.”
The lace front gave her something she’d forgotten she was missing: the freedom to move naturally. To gesture without thinking. To be herself without constantly managing her wig.
And the realism? That was the other revelation. The hairline looked natural enough that she stopped worrying about whether people could tell.
Going for more flexibility
After experiencing the flexibility of a lace front, Sarah was ready to take the next step.
This month, she came back for a fitting of our all rounder cap wig and the difference was immediate.

“It’s so light,” she kept saying, moving her head from side to side. “I can pull it up into a ponytail without any glue. I don’t have to plan my hairstyles around what the wig can do anymore.”
This is what we mean when we talk about the limitations of standard NHS wigs. They’re designed to be functional and affordable, which is important. But they’re not designed for the kind of lifestyle flexibility that women like Sarah need.
All rounder caps offer 360-degree versatility. Style it up, down, or to the side. Live your life without constantly thinking about what your wig will or won’t allow.
Beyond the NHS Wig Standard
Here’s what we hear time and time again from clients who’ve made the switch from NHS wigs to custom lace options:
The weight difference is remarkable. Standard wigs can feel heavy and hot, especially during long work days. Lace caps are significantly lighter and more breathable.
The hairline changes everything. A hand-plucked lace hairline looks like hair growing from your scalp, not sitting on top of it.
Movement feels natural. The hair flows and bounces like real hair because it’s not restricted by a rigid cap structure.
Styling options expand dramatically. From ponytails to updos to simply tucking hair behind your ears suddenly everything is possible.
The Real Cost of “Free”
NHS wigs serve an important purpose. They ensure that women experiencing hair loss have access to something when they need it most.
But “free” comes with hidden costs.
The cost of not being able to style your hair the way you want. The cost of feeling self-conscious at work events. The cost of avoiding certain hairstyles or situations because your wig won’t cooperate. The cost of feeling like you’re managing your appearance rather than simply living.
What Bespoke Actually Means
During Sarah’s fitting last week, we spent time adjusting the density around her hairline, tweaking the cap size for optimal comfort, and discussing the colour blend that would work best with her skin tone.
This is what you don’t get with NHS wigs or high street alternatives: personalisation.
Every head is different. Every lifestyle is different. Every woman has different priorities for how she wants to look and feel.
Custom means your wig works for your life, not the other way around.
Sarah’s journey with us continues, and we’re honoured to be part of it. If you’re currently wearing NHS wigs or high street alternatives and wondering whether custom lace options might give you more freedom, we’d love to talk. Book a consultation to discuss what’s possible.
